“James, I’m going to get some fresh air, ok?” Matt whispers, squeezing my hand lightly. I relax at the contact, at least he doesn’t hate me. Unlike Mark and Aaron, if Aaron’s still even alive that is.
God, I’m such a useless fuck up.
Almost immediately after Mattie leaves, I feel Mark’s eyes fix on me. I turn away, unable to look at him but he comes and sits next to me.
“Do you really think this is my fault?” he asks sincerely. I shake my head, tears welling up in my eyes.
Mark moves closer, lowering his voice as if he’s ashamed of his words.
“What you said, about me not loving Aaron, it’s not true you know.” I hear him choke out; fighting tears the same way I am. “I know I don’t act like it but…”
“I know” I cut him off, knowing that if he breaks down I’ll do the same. “I’m sorry I said it.”
“Does Aaron know that?” he asks me, one hand clutching at my knee in desperation. “Does he know that I love him?”
I want to lie, I want to put his mind at rest more than anything in the world but I can’t lie to him about this, he needs to know the truth.
“He… he doesn’t think that you do, Mark. He thinks that you only want him for sex, he thinks he means nothing to you and you haven’t exactly done anything to prove otherwise, have you?”
One look at Mark’s distraught face was enough to make James both regret his words and feel like the worst person in the world, he’d never seen so much pain and self-loathing in one expression. Angry tears were rolling unchecked down the brunet’s cheeks as he sobbed pitifully.
“He’s going to die isn’t he? He’s going to die and never know… I can’t let that happen James.. I can’t, I can’t, Oh God, PLEASE let him be ok.. this is all my fault.”
He drops his head into my lap and begins howling unashamedly, startling the woman beside me. I pet his hair and rub his back, trying desperately to console him.
Mark’s head jerks up to face the doctor who just spoke.
“Can you come with me, please?” she asks, Mark complies.
I watch, first in apprehension, then in horror as I see Mark, through the glass of the door, slump down, crying against the doctor’s chest as she stumbles, unable to keep upright with Mark’s arms flung around her neck.
Then I realise something strange… they’re both smiling.
“James, JAMES!” Mark calls to me, stumbling back in and wiping his eyes. “He’s alive, Aaron’s alive!”
Then, all hostilities fully forgotten, we walk to each other and embrace.
